Concrete Collaborative

Founded in 2007, Concrete Collaborative is a family-owned company fueled by the creation of artisanal concrete and terrazzo surfaces. The company’s products are made from responsibly sourced raw materials and their factory uses a closed-loop system to re-capture water, recycle concrete waste, and air cure products to eliminate carbon emissions.

Project Goals

After 10 years of exponential growth, with ever-increasing sales and an expanding online audience, Concrete Collaborative decided it was time for a brand facelift. They hired us as a design consultant to assist in the refresh, redesigning a new concept for their website and product collateral.

Art Direction

The founding team consisted of three women and two men, so we wanted to find a balance of masculinity and femininity in the way they showcased the brand. In working closely with the team, we took inspiration from their concrete tile lines to create a muted color palette, softening their seemingly masculine edge. The colors also served as an organizational element as we applied a color to each of the concrete tile lines.

Color Palette

There is an extensive color palette with each color to accommodate the large range of Concrete Collaborative products – designating a color to each product line. In cases where two or more colors are needed, a more vibrant, complementary color is chosen.

Website Design

It didn’t seem right for their Instagram profile of 75k followers (at the time) to lead customers to the existing website, which lacked the depth of character seen in their concrete tiles. They tasked us with providing art direction and web design that incorporated modern colors and shapes to pay homage to their modern, nontraditional tiles.

Custom Iconography

Technical documents can be, well, technical. But some of this technical information can be communicated graphically, with icons.

Here’s the full set of icons representing the attributes or functions of their concrete tiles.

Product Collateral

Technical documents don’t have to be so boring and technical. There’s always an opportunity to create a satisfying, and informative, viewing experience. We cleaned up the layout to provide more breathing room and added color to soften the feel.
